Movement

“Movement is the song of the body.”

Vanda Scaravelli, American pianist and yoga practitioner

At Nurture Pilates, movement is the raison d’etre, “the reason to be,” the philosophy of life. Nurture Pilates recognizes that as living beings we move constantly; even when we are sitting still, or sleeping, we are breathing, our hearts are pumping blood, our cells are dividing, and the subatomic particles that make up our matter are spinning and interchanging. To move, simply, is to live. And to move simply — with efficiency and ease — is the way to stay vital and happy.

Bodily Integrity

“Pilates is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.”

Joseph Pilates, German-American bodybuilder, inventor, and creator of the Pilates Method of Contrology (Pilates)

Nurture Pilates believes that all bodies are sacred spaces and deserve to be treated as such. Pilates as a physical fitness method does not brutalize bodies by pushing them beyond their natural anatomical and kinesthetic limits, rather it honors and respects how individual bodies are made; and as such, Nurture Pilates is dedicated to teaching techniques that celebrate what individual bodies can do.

Care

“Poetry is not a luxury.”

Audre Lorde, American writer, feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist

“A gardener’s education begins with the realization that we are never exempt from the needs and requirements of care. It is formed through sustained attention to and responsibility for the places that give us life.

Norman Wirzba, American theologian

Nurture is about caring for and encouraging growth and development in ourselves and the world about us. Nurture Pilates values your growth and development, and is dedicated to teaching techniques that respect you as a body and honor your movement goals and needs.
